VAT on food

The simplest way to make healthy foods cheaper is to remove VAT on all unprocessed foods. This avoids endless discussions about what constitutes health and arguments with lobbyists about exemptions for their particular products. Almost all unprocessed foods are healthy, and almost all industrially processed foods use methods and additives that reduce their health value. But don't worry. A discussion about this is hardly worth the effort, because a restructuring of the tax system to regulate behaviour in relation to health and the environment is out of the question in our political system, which is based on defending privileges rather than creating a better society. The Social Democrats are controlled by the interests of the Food and Beverage Workers' Union, and the Conservatives are controlled by the interests of industry. They will not be able to agree and look at the interests of the population or the country.
