USA and NATO
The USA is still a member of NATO, but I believe they are on their way out. The attempt to annex Greenland must be seen in that context.
It is obviously not necessary for the USA to take over Greenland today, but if the USA leaves NATO, then Canada and Greenland would constitute a potential threat from NATO against the USA. Hence the plans to annex them before the USA leaves NATO.
One could say the same about Mexico, but if the USA suddenly had that many Latinos in the country, the MAGA movement would not be able to hold power, as it is based on white men, and secondly, Mexico is not allied with other powers and therefore does not constitute a military threat against the USA. They can be bullied without consequences. That's not possible with NATO countries.
